Winter Weddings: How to Face the Elements in Style

Posted In: Fashion

If you’ve RSVP’d to a winter wedding, you may already be wondering what to wear. There are many things to consider, from the dress code to the unavoidable subject of the weather. It’s a given that a winter wedding outfit will need to stand up to the elements, but don’t let it cramp your style. Just follow a few simple rules to create a sophisticated, season-appropriate wedding outfit.

A Few Small Changes

Dressing for a winter wedding shouldn’t be a test. If you have a tried and tested wedding style, just a few small changes in what you shop for can make picking the perfect outfit a breeze. To keep warm, it’s about adjusting the proportions and choosing the right fabrics – swap those cap sleeves for full length sleeves and opt for luscious lace rather than airy chiffon, or heavier jacquard instead of light cotton. To pick your palette, simply stick to the darker shades within the spectrum of your favourite colour. Choose navy instead of pastel blue, emerald green instead of mint, plum purple instead of lilac; and for prints pick bold roses rather than pretty daisies.

Cosy Cover-up

If you don’t want to shiver your way through the ceremony, bare arms simply aren’t an option. A cover up is essential to any winter wedding outfit if you’ve chosen a sleeveless top or dress – or even if you haven’t and you want that extra layer. Delicate wraps and light jackets are great for summer, but you’ll need a little more coverage in those cold months. Opt for a long sleeved blazer or tailored jacket if your outfit errs on the formal side. For a softer, more unstructured feel, choose a faux fur stole or a cosy cardigan. A cardigan in a soft knit will look pretty with a floaty, feminine dress, keeping you warm without adding bulk, whereas a fur stole wrapped around your shoulders adds an instant edge of glamour.

Unique Chic

A dress is often the obvious choice for a wedding guest outfit, so why not buck the trend and go for a suit, or trousers and a top? You’ll look sleek and stylish, and you’ll be ready to face even the iciest conditions head on. Wearing separates really opens up your options; co-ordinated colours and clean lines will look chic, and pulled-together, whilst you can really pack a style punch by cleverly mixing and matching prints, textures and colours. Don’t forget, matching up your accessories is a handy trick to bring all the elements of your outfit together.
