Maximise your maxi dress this winter

maxi dressMaxi dresses were one of the big style trends over the summer and we here at Kaleidoscope were very pleased. Maxi dresses cover a multitude of sins and still manage to look sexy at the same time. Clever, eh? Who says you need to show your legs to look foxy? If you’ve still got your summer maxi, you can definitely wear it during transition season as long as you make sure you’re warm (and up to date fashion-wise) by combining it with a few new season items. If you never had a maxi dress, or simply fancy treating yourself to something new, fear not – you’ll be seeing plenty of maxis this winter, made from material suitable for the colder months.

Accessorising your summer maxi dress

So let’s start with ways to dress up your summer maxi to make it October-friendly. First of all, you might want to treat yourself to one of the key statement pieces this season – the gilet. A fake fur gilet will look amazing over your maxi dress as well as keeping you warm and toasty.

In a similar vein, the scarf continues to be a statement piece. A nice chunky cotton scarf, perhaps with trendy tassels, will look brilliant with your maxi dress and again it will keep your neck warm as well. If you have a patterned maxi dress, contrast with a plain scarf (and similarly, a patterned maxi dress will be set off nicely by a plain scarf which picks out one of the colours in the pattern).

Don’t forget what goes underneath the dress as well. No, we’re not being cheeky we’re merely suggesting that you buy yourself some thick patterned tights and a pair or two of ladies boots. These are both fine accompaniments to maxi dresses and a much warmer winter alternative to the sandals we wore with them in the summer. High-heeled boots in particular look very glamorous with maxis. You could wear ankle boots for a very trendy look, especially if they have shearing in them. You could also team your summer maxi with a chunky piece of knitwear – perhaps a long cardigan or bolero. Practical and cosy too!

Winter maxi dresses

Now let’s turn our attention to winter maxis. The high street and your favourite home shopping catalogues have got a few nifty numbers for you to choose from. Some of the best winter maxis out there feature key trends for winter, like textured patterns and embellishment. We suggest buying yourself a maxi dress with long sleeves and then accentuating your waist with a belt. Try a long leather belt that doubles up around your waist, preferably in a tan colour. For a real 70s look, buy yourself a floppy hat as well. Very Annie Hall!

All in all, we love maxi dresses and are happy to see them still floating around bewitchingly as the winter fashion season approaches. Enjoy experimenting with yours to get a look that really suits your style.
