Keeping your Home Cosy During Crisp Winter Months

Posted In: Home and Lifestyle

As the temperature outside dips, make your home warm and inviting by decorating for the season. Just a few tweaks can transform any room into a cosy haven in which to escape the elements.

All About Accents

Simply changing the accent colours of a room can completely overhaul the feel without having to take any drastic action with a paint brush. Swapping around easily changed details such as cushions, throws and shelf ornaments is quick and easy but can have surprisingly transformational results. Infuse your room with the rich, warming tones of red, brown, bronze, gold and cream. Thick weaves, soft fleeces and plaids are ideal textiles for winter, so think warm in texture as well as colour for a truly cosy effect. Such small changes can make a big difference.

Light It Up

As the days get shorter and the nights draw in, lighting is one of the most important aspects of creating a snug, welcoming atmosphere. Well placed mirrors will make the most of natural light even on the dullest of days, whilst lamps and ornamental lighting features will set a homely tone. Lighting at mid-room height will create a soft effect, so opt for lamps and low hung ceiling shades.  For feature lighting, choose natural-looking pieces which emulate the outdoors for a wintry touch.

Warm Underfoot

Hardwood floors, tiles and stone flooring are a beautiful feature in any home but during the winter months they can feel less than inviting underfoot so treat your feet, and your home, to a rug, runner or sheepskin. Opt for colours that complement your colour scheme, and don’t be afraid to layer up with contrasting designs for an eclectic feel. And, not just for the floor, a sheepskin also looks fabulous draped over an arm chair for an on-trend yet cosy interior styling trick.

Cosy Hideaway

Making a cosy nook to come home to can make the frosty weather much more bearable. A comfy wingback chair is the perfect place to snuggle up with a book, but if a new chair isn’t an option, the simple addition of a footstool and a sumptuous new cushion can serve to add that indulgent touch needed to truly relax. Alternatively, make-over your bedroom with soft, inviting bed sheets and thick blankets. It’s all about creating a dedicated space to while away those long evenings.
