How to Dress an Oval Body Shape

Posted In: Fashion

Oval body shapes are one of the most common figures around. If you think you might have an oval or apple shaped figure, you’re not alone! There are millions of women around the world with a similar shape to yours. That means there is plenty of styles out there to make you look and feel great, ensuring that you find the right styles and fits to suit your figure.

Dressing to suit your shape simply means finding cuts of clothes that highlight your best features. There are some styles that work better for certain shapes. If you’ve ever tried on a piece of clothing that just doesn’t look right, it could be because the shape or fit isn’t flattering your best assets.

To help you find the clothes that make you feel the most confident, we’re sharing our advice on how to dress an oval body shape.

What is an oval body shape?

Before we get started, it’s important to understand what an oval body shape is. Generally speaking, oval figures are widest around the middle. You might notice that you also have the following features of slender legs, a large bust and narrower hips. The key to dressing for an Oval body type is to create a defined waist. When choosing clothes, silhouettes that define your waist can be a great option, as they help to create shapes and lines.

Choosing tops for an oval figure:

When choosing tops for an apple shape, look for styles that define your midsection. Avoid tops that are too form fitting or shapeless, structure is your best friend with oval figures. We suggest choosing:

  • Tailored tunic-style tops that nip in at the waist and flare out towards the bottom. V-necks and plunge styles are often the most flattering.
  • Square or scoop neck button down blouses that have waist-cinching tailoring. Look for blouses or shirts that have detailing around the neck to draw attention to your upper body too.
  • Jackets that have a belt or nipped in tailoring. Try to find styles that have a button beneath your bust for the most flattering fit.

Skirts and trousers for oval figures:

Whether you want to throw on your favourite skirt or a pair of comfy jeans, there are plenty of trouser and skirt options out there to flatter your figure. We suggest choosing:

  • Wide leg trousers or palazzo pants. These are really flattering on those with an oval body shape as they help to create balance between your midsection and bottom half. They can also help to create curves on your hips.
  • A-line or skater skirts. These skim over your tummy area and create a curvier shape. Be sure to choose high-waisted styles, as these will help to create a defined waist. Don’t be afraid to choose mini skirts in these styles too; you’ve got the legs for them!
  • Midi skirts with ruffled detailing. While it’s usually best to avoid pencil skirts and form-fitting midis (these can make you look a little unbalanced), full circle skirts or midis with ruffled detailing work beautifully for women with an oval body shape.

Dresses for oval shaped body:

Whether you’re petite, plus size or anything in between, there are plenty of dresses for an oval shaped body out there. The trick is finding styles that work for you. The perfect dress for oval figures tends to be nipped in at the waist and floatier around your bottom half, giving you a gorgeously balanced silhouette. We suggest choosing:

  • Dresses with a plunging neckline. V-neck dresses and plunging styles are perfect for oval figures.
  • Dresses with full, flowing skirts. Oval figures can sometimes need a little help in creating curves. Full or flowing skirts that don’t cling to your midsection are perfect for this, particularly if they have a belted or tailored waistline.
  • Strapless or sleeveless dresses. Take advantage of your figure by choosing strapless, sleeveless or bardot dresses.

Celebrate your shape by choosing clothes that flatter and compliment your oval figure. Whether you’re looking for tops, trousers or dresses that work for you, selecting the right cuts can help you to feel more confident about your look.
