How to dress an inverted-triangle body shape

What is an inverted triangle body shape?

If you have an inverted triangle body shape, the top part of your body is larger than the bottom half, meaning that you probably wear a bigger top size than trouser size. Your shoulders are wider than your hips, you have a large bust, and your hips are small.

The good news is that there are lots of clothes that look incredible on an inverted triangle body type – lucky you! There are also a number of gorgeous celebrities with this body shape, including Naomi Campbell, Demi Moore, and Renee Zellweger, so you’re in good company.

So how should you dress if you have an inverted triangle, sometimes called a ‘carrot shaped’ body? Well, the answer to that question is however you please! But if you would like some tips on how to make the most of your gorgeous assets, read on.

1. Vertical Stripes

Vertical stripes are a style must-have for any body shape, but inverted triangle ladies can use them to flatter the top half, creating the illusion of slimmer shoulders and bringing it into proportion with your hips. Try a smart striped shirt and clack tailored trousers for work, or why not throw on a vertically-striped day dress for those relaxed summer days? Pair yours with wedged sandals and a floppy sun hat, and you’ve got the perfect holiday outfit.

2. Open Jackets

When wearing a jacket, try to keep it open to create a vertical line. Just like wearing vertical lines on your top half, this will help create the illusion of a smaller top half and bring it into proportion with the rest of your body. For an on-trend, androgynous look, choose an all-black tailored suit with a blouse and brogues. You might want to avoid anything with large shoulder pads if you already have a larger top half.

3. V-Necks

Wearing a V-neck top will accentuate a vertical line, so this style is ideal for inverted-triangle body shapes. Wearing a shirt for work? Leave a couple of buttons undone, as this will create the illusion of a V-neck and flatter your top half.

4. Cinched-in Waist

To flatter your body shape and create the illusion of a more hourglass figure, try dresses and tops that cinch in at the waist. Belted dress are great for this, and bang on-trend too! Or try a tunic-style top that can be pulled in at the waist – these look great with pair of skinny jeans for a boho-esque casual look.

5. Full Skirts

Create more width on your bottom half with a full skirt. This will draw the eye down to your hips, creating the illusion of a more hourglass figure and flattering your shape. Looking to find the perfect dress for that event? Look for an A-line design or something with more attention on the bottom half, and you’re sure to look and feel amazing!

6. Bold colours and prints on the bottom

Forget run-of-the-mill black trousers, now’s the time to go bold! The great thing about having an inverted-triangle body shape is that you can experiment with vibrant hues and unique prints on your bottom half, and it will always flatter your figure. Think chilled-out printed trousers for a relaxed festival vibe, or an eye-catching skirt for chic days out – you can’t go wrong.

Top tip: you want all the attention to be on your fabulous prints, so when wearing a bolder bottom half, choose a plain top half.

7. Wide Leg Trousers

Comfortable, flattering and oh-so-stylish, we just can’t get enough of wide-leg trousers. They’re also perfect for those of us with an inverted triangle body shape, as they help create the illusion of wider hips. Pair yours with a plain white tee and flat sandals for a relaxed, effortlessly-chic look.

8. Culottes

Looking for your next style staple? Choose a pair of culottes. Culottes are perfect for inverted triangle body shapes as they give the illusion of a full skirt yet offer the comfort and style of a trouser. Add a bold print and you’ve got yourself a chic, on-trend look that will flatter your figure, and have everyone asking where you bought those fabulous culottes from!
