It’s fun to follow fashion but you should never try to squeeze yourself into something that’s just not going to suit your body shape. Clever dressing means choosing clothes to suit your frame – whether you’re petite or curvy, boyishly shaped or pear-shaped.

Petite figures should steer clear of busy patterns, too much draping, and wide-legged trousers. Take advantage of your neat and petite frame and choose short jackets with three-quarter length sleeves and tailored, straight-legged trousers.

If you’re pear-shaped try to find clothes that will balance out your body and avoid shapeless items: they may make you look bigger. Dark shades and structured cuts will look great on you: boot cut trousers and A-line skirts are a fine choice.

Big-busted women (the envy of their flatter-chested sisters!) should avoid high-necked tops, especially polo neck tops, because they can make you look droopy. Instead, choose tops which show a little – but not too much! – cleavage and remember to always, always wear a bra (so choose tops where your straps won’t be on show).

Remember that just because a particular style might be in fashion you don’t necessarily have to wear it if it doesn’t suit your figure. There will always be plenty of alternative stylish choices that flatter and enhance your shape.
