Find your perfect bed linen

In this guide we'll take you through types of fabric, weaves and finishes to help you choose your perfect bedding

Fabrics

The type of fabric and colour can really alter the way you sleep. The most comfortable fabric for bedding is cotton as it is soft, durable and long lasting, particularly ones with a sateen weave for a silky soft sleep. We recommend breathable 100% natural fabrics for the best nights sleep to prevent overheating, with fabrics like cotton, linen and silk. Opting for white sheets gives a luxurious hotel style whilst creating a relaxing sleep environment. If you want long lasting bedding, opt for 100% cotton or linen, in particular Egyptian cotton as it is durable and resistant to tearing and pilling due to its long, strong fibres.

Polycotton is a mix of soft cotton and durable polyester. A 50% polyester and 50% cotton mix produce easy care qualities and requires minimum ironing.

Cotton is the most popular fabric used to make sheets and other bedding. It is durable, breathable, soft and affordable. It is generally easy to care for but may require more extensive ironing after washing than polycotton as it is more likely to crease.

Weaves & Finishes

It's all in the details, let us help you to find the perfect weave for you and help to explain the differences between each fabrication terminology. Not only is material and your preferred thread count important, the way the threads are woven can also have an impact on the softness and finish of each fabric.

Cotton sateen is a smooth fabric with a silky glossy finish on one side and a matte flat finish on the underside giving a luxury quality and making it soft to touch.

What is a thread count?

Simply said, the thread count is used to describe the density of the threads per square inch. When buying your bed linen, all you need to remember is that the higher the number, the smoother, softer and more luxurious the fabric will feel.

Higher thread counts require finer threads and are generally softer, smoother and more tightly woven. Although they are stronger and more durable, they are also heavier and more hotel-like, so if you are a hot sleeper you may prefer a lower thread count between 200-400 for a more breathable, airier feel. It is important to note, whichever thread count you choose, the most important indicator for quality is the material itself e.g. cotton, linen, polycotton.

You count both lengthwise (warp) and widthwise (weft) threads. So, 100 lengthwise threads woven with 100 widthwise threads produce a thread count of 200.

Good-quality bed sheets come in
at a thread count of 200.

Luxury bedding would generally be anything from 400 thread count Egyptian cotton all the way up to 1200 thread count, which is the highest available.

Find your perfect duvet & pillow

A good duvet & pillow can make all the difference to a good night's sleep. We have a wide range of options for all budgets and can help you to find your perfect match. We offer a range of natural and synthetic products in a variety of togs so you can make the correct choice for you.

Natural

Duvets with a high down content are traditionally lightweight but with excellent thermal performance. Choose one with a high feather content if you like your duvet to feel heavy.

Down and feather pillows mould snugly round the head and shoulders. The more feathers there are a pillow, the firmer it tends to be.

Choose natural if you want:

Synthetic

Synthetic duvets are predominately made from microfibre or hollowfibre polyester which makes for a soft, silky, warm and lightweight feel. Both microfibre and hollowfibre are machine washable, making them very easy to care for.

Our hollowfibre pillow types, including lightweight fine fibres, provide the closest feel to a down pillow. Man-made fillings are best for allergy/asthma sufferers and are easy to care for.

Which duvet to choose?

A duvet's tog rating is important as it relates to its warmth (but not its weight, which depends on filling). The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet, with 2.5 - 7 tog perfect for spring and summer and 10.5 - 13.5 ideal for autumn and winter.

If you want flexibility and versatility, all-season duvets are a great choice. They consist of two separate duvets, usually a lightweight 4.5 tog for summer and a warmer 9 tog for autumn and spring. They connect together to make a 13.5 tog in winter.

Summer lightweight duvet

Choose a duvet with a 1 - 4.5 tog rating, better for warmer nights.

Spring/Autumn weight duvet
7 - 10.5 tog
Choose a duvet with a 7 - 10.5 tog rating to keep you cosy without overheating.

Winter weight duvet
12 - 13.5 tog
Choose a duvet with a 12 - 13.5 tog rating to keep you wonderfully snug on cold nights.

Which pillow to choose?

Pillow preference is a very personal thing, but as a general rule the way you tend to sleep should make the decision making process easier.

Which pillow to choose?

If you sleep on your SIDE:

Choose firm

A firm pillow is recommended as it keeps the spine aligned and prevents hunching and a painful neck.

If you sleep on your BACK:

Choose medium

It will provide enough support for the neck without affecting the alignment of your spine.

If you sleep on your FRONT:

Choose soft

A soft pillow is great as it provides the right amount of comfortable cushioning.
