Soul Searching: What Wellness Trends Have The UK Been Googling The Most?

Posted In: Home and Lifestyle

There probably isn’t a person on earth who in the last year hasn’t wanted a bit more calm, certainty and inner peace in their lives. Global lockdowns have helped give many people more time to think about their health and wellness and for many there has been a focus on mental health and spirituality.

2020 was the year we all started working out at home en-mass but according to Google Search data it was also the year we all started to really think about looking after ourselves mind, body and soul.

Here at Kaleidoscope, we are taking a look at the biggest wellness trends on Google over the past year to see how the UK have started to show a more holistic approach to wellbeing and looking after ourselves in 2021 and beyond.

Kaleidoscope Wellness - Mind

With many taking the time in the past year to re-set their life goals, a big trend to surface are affirmations. Used to overcome sabotaging and negative thoughts, affirmations are positive statements about yourself that, when repeated often, you can start to make positive changes in your life. Since 2019, searches for ‘words of affirmation’ have increased by a huge 125%.

Similarly, manifestations, which involves bringing something tangible into your life through attraction and belief, have also seen a significant increase in popularity since 2019. Helped by a viral trend on the video platform Tik Tok, searches for 3-6-9 manifestations have risen by a staggering 15900%.

Another popular wellness trend in the past year is breath work. Possibly spurred on by the increase in searches for tips on relaxing and sleeping, breathing techniques can positively affect a person’s mental, emotional and physical state. Since 2019, searches for Dutch breath expert, Wim Hof have risen by 311% since pre-lockdown times.

Kaleidoscope Wellness - Body

It would be no surprise to say that the online interest for at-home workouts is through the roof YoY. With people desperate to get their hands on some gym equipment, searches are up 233% since 2019 from people looking to turn their homes into a makeshift gym.

However, with not everyone able to access equipment, many turned to exercises that mostly require no equipment at all – yoga and pilates for example.

In the last year, the demand for these types of exercise workouts is sky high with searches for ‘yoga for beginners at home’ rising by 175% and ‘pilates for beginners at home’ also up 136%.

Parents even looked to get their children in on the action to burn off some pent up energy with searches for Cosmic Kids Yoga rising by a huge 234%.

Kaleidoscope Wellness - Soul

With many doing little soul searching to find some inner peace, people who may have once only been interested in exercising to maintain their wellbeing are now digging a little deeper.

Since 2019, searches for meditation are up 49%, with morning meditations in particular increasing by 52%. The practice, which uses techniques to focus the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity to achieve an emotionally calm state, could see an increasing popularity in the years to come with the news that wellness app Headspace has recently partnered with Netflix on a series of guided meditations.

Another increasing trend are crystals which, in the past year, have seen a 50% increase in search volume for crystals such as selenite, aventurine and smoky quartz. Said to be a great way to promote the flow of good energy in the body, crystals are touted as an ancient form of medicine with many turning to them again today.

Also significantly increasing in popularity since 2019 are chakras. Searches for Sudarshan chakras, Sacral chakra and Manipura chakra are up by at least 85% YoY. Referring to energy points in your body, chakras are thought to be spinning disks of energy inside our bodies that positively affect our emotional and physical well-being if aligned.

Top Tips For Holistic Wellness

No one could have predicted all the ways COVID-19 would change our view on wellness. But if we can take one thing from the past year, it’s the importance of opening our minds to how we maintain our health, both mentally and physically. Wellness guru, Simone from Yoga with Simone shares her wellness practice tips that anyone can take with them to create a calming 2021.

1. Journaling

The aim of this exercise is to allow us to feel and process our emotions to give them permission to move through us, releasing their physical and mental hold.

Write down 3 words to describe how you are feeling today. And it’s important here that we don’t try to hide or shy away from any emotions that may be perceived as negative. And of course if you’re feeling pretty darn good, get that down there too!

You could also write 3 (or more) things you are grateful for. These can be big concepts like family, career, a house, or a small moment like a morning cup of tea, the sun shining through a window or a favourite song.

Allow yourself to feel sincere gratitude when you are listing them as this is a powerful way to invite more of what brings you joy into your life.

2. Move Your Body

Any heart raising activity is going to benefit your physical, mental and emotional health, be it yoga, running, weightlifting, rollerblading, or parkour even!

The key to exercising regularly and consistently is choosing an activity that you enjoy and yes, that absolutely can be a daily 20-minute lunchtime stomp around the block or a good old bedroom boogie.

And if you’re not sure what your thing is yet, let yourself try a few out. You’ll soon find the one!

3. Mindfulness

When you are having that morning cup of tea, do you take note of the entire process? From boiling the kettle right through to looking into the bottom of that empty, tea stained mug.

Allowing ourselves to notice the tiny moments of magic that occur throughout the process – the smell of the tea as you choose the bag from the tin, the water changing colour as the flavour begins to infuse, the warmth of the mug in your hands, the sensation of that first sip going down your throat and nourishing your body.

It’s all about allowing yourself to truly, and without distractions, indulge in the task at hand.

These moments of mindfulness transform the everyday. They make the ordinary feel extraordinary and provide you with tiny pockets of joy in your day that otherwise potentially get lost in the chaos.

4. Shift “have to” to “get to”

A slight shift in the language we use can make overwhelming tasks feel a little easier.

Every time you are approaching a task, take a moment to notice if you use the words “should”, “got to” or “have to.”

When we shift that language to “can”, “want to” or “get to” we immediately approach the task with more purpose and conviction.

The more we do this, the easier these tasks can begin to feel.

5. Create your hygge

Create my what now?

Hygge is a hugely popular concept which has been coined by The Danish Art Of Happiness. It is all about comfort, cosiness and contentment as a way of life to keep yourself consistently well, safe and happy.

A wonderful way to find this in our day-to-day life is by designating a time of our day and a particular space where you can retreat to feel this cosy comfort.

Inviting in only dim and warm light, surrounding yourself with soft furnishings made from natural fibres, lighting a candle of natural scents, having a hot drink, cuddling up with a pet or a loved are all ways to create hygge.

6. You Time

You deserve at least 30 minutes, out of the 1,440 minutes that are gifted to us each day, entirely for yourself to do something you enjoy.

They’re ready when you are!

7. Breathe

Finally, and most importantly – don’t forget to breathe because benefits to breathing techniques are vast!

Some help access the parasympathetic nervous system which help us feel calm and relaxed, some help to energise us and others help to balance our emotions and our bodies for us feel a little more grounded.

Whatever technique we choose, even if that is just becoming more aware of our inhale and exhale, each of them allows the mind to begin to declutter, allowing us to respond with more clarity, decisiveness and rationality.
