Towel Fabric & Construction

Towel Fabric

There are a number of different types of cottons used to make towels, each with their own properties and characteristics. The most important characteristics of cotton are fibre length, fineness and strength. The better these features, the smoother, softer and more lustrous the yarn will be.

Pure Cotton

Standard thread lengths, but still soft with good absorbency, and long-lasting if cared for according to the instructions. A great everyday towel

Combed Cotton

Combing removes excess small fibres to reduce shedding

Egyptian Cotton

Famed for its superior quality, this cotton is only grown in a specific area in the Nile Delta. It produces long, soft fibres, making it highly absorbent and silky soft to the touch

Supima Cotton

A global trade mark used to identify 100% US grown Pima cotton, recognised for its superior quality, durability and absorbency

Turkish Cotton

Sourced from the Aegean region in Turkey, the mature and long fibres produce a yarn that is highly absorbent and soft with a slight sheen

Christy Supreme Hygro Range

These Supima cotton 650gsm towels are super soft and extremely absorbent. Made using Christy’s unique hygro technology, a spinning technique creates a hollow fibre which traps air during tumble drying to give a think, fluffy pile

Towel Construction

The way in which your towels are made affects how long they will last and how they feel

Loops

Also known as the "pile", the length and amount of loops determine the towel's surface area, and therefore its absorbency. The more loops it has, and the longer they are, the better its ability to retain moisture

Twist

Twist refers to the number of twists per inch of yarn. The lower the amount of twist per inch, the more plush the towel will feel, while a high twist adds strength and durability

Towelling Weights

GSM stands for grams per square metre, and the higher the GSM, the more luxurious the towel. The better the towel, the more moisture they can absorb.

Towel with a GSM of 300-400 are lighter-weight, and make good guest and decorative towels, and are also ideal for beach and gym towels. As they are also quicker-drying, they are often suitable for young children.

Anything around 500 GSM and above makes a great bath towel, and will be much more absorbent.

Towel Care

- Wash towel before use as this will help improve absorbency and reduce lint shedding

- Always follow the washing and water temperature instructions, and use the recommended amount of detergent. Make sure neat detergent does not come into contact with your towels as this can fade the colour.

- Avoid detergents that contain bleaching agents as they can permanently discolour your towels. A detergent specifically designed for colours will help prolong the life of your towels

- Avoid fabric conditioner as this can reduce the absorbency of the towel

- Use scissors to cut any pulled loops; this will not damage your towel

- To give a soft finish, tumble dry on a low heat setting
