There are so many evening dresses to choose from in the high street and in your favourite home shopping catalogues that you can easily get confused trying to decide which one will suit you best.

When it comes to women’s dresses, and specifically evening dresses, there really is a dress shape (and colour) to suit every body type and colouring. It’s just a question of finding the right one for you.

If you don’t know where to start, let us come to the rescue with this handy guide to finding the perfect evening guide for your shape!

Tall womens' dresses

Ladies’ fashion, traditionally, has not been kind to tall women. Trousers often come up too short, shirts stop around the midriff instead of around the hips and as for sleeves – don’t even talk about it!
Luckily, when it comes to evening dresses, you actually have a chance to show off your height in a flattering way.

If you’re tall and you’ve got the legs for it, then a shorter evening dress can look really fabulous on you. Now, we don’t necessarily mean a mini skirt. Remember that a mini skirt on anybody else will look like a micro skirt (or a belt!) on you if you’re really tall. Knee length is the perfect length for you when it comes to party wear.

We really like this Tiered Sheen Dress, which comes down to the knee and is very glamorous without being too showy. It’s the perfect piece of eveningwear to show off your long limbs: because it’s sleeveless, you can show your lithe arms as well as your long legs. The V neckline is very feminine too.

A word about high heels – don’t be put off wearing them just because you’re tall. They do good things to all legs and look great with party dresses. If you are really self-conscious, however, then there’s nothing wrong with wearing some decorated flat pumps like these Jewel and Sequin Ballerinas.

It’s all gone pear shaped

The most common body shape in the UK is the pear shape – slender on the top and rounder on the bottom. This is no bad thing – Kate Winslet and Shakira are pear shapes and they look fantastic.

Long and empire line dresses are great for you because they lengthen the body and keep your curves in proportion. With that in mind, your figure will look just lovely in this fantastic Sparkle Long Dress.

Petite party dresses

Petite women have to be careful too when it comes to ladies’ fashion – you don’t want to be swamped by bold patterns or too much material. If you’re petite, flatter your small frame in women’s dresses that are plain, neat and relatively short, and then add some glitz and glamour with shiny, ladylike accessories.

This Together Party Dress is perfect for you because it’s just the right side of clingy – something that petite women can really carry off – and sleek and sophisticated too. This is a no-nonsense party dress that’s grown-up and sexy.
